FireFox 3 and OnSpeed - Mystery files in C:\

OnSpeed Internet Accelerator settings

Using OnSpeed with FireFox 3
I have been using OnSpeed in conjunction with my Vodafone mobile broadband dongle to improve speeds and reduce bandwidth consumption. When I upgraded to FireFox 3 I noticed many strange files appearing in the root directory of my hard disk.

Sample of the files

After some research online I found that they are apparently produced by the FireFox addon "Slipstream SP" which gets installed alongside OnSpeed. Obviously unless periodically deleted these files will clog up the hard disk so a solution was needed.

Disabling the Slipstream SP extension stops OnSpeed from working but you can get it going again easily enough by manually configuring FireFox to use the local OnSpeed proxy.

Manual Configuration of FireFox to use OnSpeed
First disable the two Slipstream plugins
From the "Tools" menu click "Add-ons"
Find and click the "Slipstream SP Image Decoders" then click "Disable"
Find and click the "Slipstream SP Integrator" then click "Disable"

If you display the OnSpeed statistics and view a few web pages through FireFox you will see that this has stopped OnSpeed from working - the numbers remain static.

From the FireFox "Tools" menu select "Options"
In the Options pane click "Advanced" and select the "Network" tab
Click the "Settings" button in the "Connection" section
In the "connection Settings" pane select the "Manual proxy configuration" radio button
In "HTTP Proxy" type 127.0.0.1 and in "Port" enter 5405
"OK" your way back to store this setting and close the panes

Check you've done it right
Delete all the junk files that have accumulated.
Recheck the OnSpeed statistics to confirm that it is working again and that the numbers show once again that OnSpeed is strutting its stuff speeding up the connection and saving you bandwidth.
After a while recheck c:\ and make sure no more junk files are being created.

Of course there’s no reason for it it’s just our policy.
